Our History

The Shrimp Factory was originally opened in the old ballast stone and gray brick warehouse in 1977 by Frank and Janie Harris, Savannah’s famous restauranteur family. In 1990, it was passed to Cheri Harris-Power, their daughter, who kept the delicious business going. Most recently, The Shrimp Factory changed ownership in early 2013 and now rests in the capable hands of Jennifer and Tim Strickland, the Savannah brother-and-sister foodie team famous for their delicious Gourmet Southern Candies at nearby River Street Sweets. You’ll see why when you taste the pecan pie for dessert!

Enjoy fresh-baked bread with pimento cheese to start and follow with our house specialty: Pine Bark Stew, served in a steaming kettle full of southern bouillabaisse with potatoes, onions, peppers, fresh Shrimp, Flounder, Oysters, and Blue Crab! Chef Tisha, who has been in The Shrimp Factory’s kitchen for over 15 years, loves preparing traditional Southern dishes for our guests including the beloved classic: Shrimp and Grits! Not feeling a full meal? Sit at our fully-stocked bar and enjoy our famous Shrimp Cocktail as well as the historic Chatham Artillery Punch whose recipe dates back to the 1800’s!

Haunted?

Savannah may be known as the Hostess City, but it also rumored to be a haunted one- The Shrimp Factory is no exception! Since 1977, our staff has always felt a presence upstairs in our storage facilities. Many recount different experiences with this ghost dubbed “Joe”, but we are always sure to leave rum upstairs for him, as bottles tend to fall off their shelves when we run low. Many are thankful for his presence, considering the cold flush of air they walk through when running to get supplies. For anyone skittish, not to worry! Joe has never once ventured into our downstairs area- though if you ask our staff, one or two may have a story for you!
